Chiefs Acquire Justin Fields from Jets in 2027 Pick Trade

Kansas City Chiefs have acquired quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round draft pick, sources confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The trade resolves a significant hole in the Chiefs' backup quarterback depth chart, which was left with inexperienced players after Gardner Minshew signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Fields, 27, who had a disastrous season with the Jets (2-7 record, 31st-ranked Total QBR), will provide the Chiefs with a mobile threat behind starter Patrick Mahomes during his rehab from a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee.

Fields' tenure with the Jets ended after one season, where he struggled mightily, completing just 52.4% of his passes for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception. The Jets, who signed him to a two-year, $40 million contract including $30 million guaranteed, restructured his deal to reduce their 2026 cash obligation to $10 million. The Jets are covering $7 million of that salary, with Kansas City paying the remaining $3 million, similar to their recent trade for Geno Smith. Fields' departure was anticipated after his benching on November 17th and subsequent placement on injured reserve.

Mahomes, a nine-year veteran, is rehabbing diligently under the guidance of athletic trainer Julie Frymyer, aiming to be ready for the season opener. While Fields' arrival doesn't solve the Chiefs' long-term quarterback situation, it provides immediate depth and allows Mahomes to focus solely on recovery. For the Jets, parting ways with Fields clears cap space and moves them forward with Smith, Brady Cook, and Bailey Zappe as their quarterback options heading into 2026.
