Justin Fields is embracing his new role with the Kansas City Chiefs after being acquired in a trade from the New York Jets last month. The five-year veteran revealed Tuesday that he specifically wanted to join Kansas City to learn from Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid, citing the team's winning culture as a major draw.

The financial details of the trade show the Jets are covering $7 million of Fields' $10 million guaranteed salary for 2026, while the Chiefs will pay the remaining $3 million. Fields acknowledged he and Mahomes didn't communicate much before the trade but has already begun picking the star quarterback's brain in meetings and on the field.

Mahomes is currently rehabbing from the most significant injury of his nine-year career, having surgery in December to repair torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. Despite that, Fields expressed confidence he'll gain valuable knowledge from observing how Mahomes operates in the quarterbacks room and throughout the team's operations.

Reid has been impressed with Fields' approach during the offseason program, calling him a legitimate starting quarterback in the NFL. Fields stated his mindset remains unchanged whether he starts or serves as a backup, emphasizing his goal is simply to get better each day in Kansas City's system.
