Bengals Trim Burrow Deal, Unlock $10M Cap Space

The Cincinnati Bengals have restructured quarterback Joe Burrow’s contract, freeing $10 million in cap room for the 2026 season. By shifting part of his 2023 extension, the team can now maneuver around the hefty $275 million deal that kept the franchise tight on payroll.

The move follows a predraft deal that sent the 10th overall pick to the Denver Broncos in exchange for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II. Before the adjustment, Cincinnati carried only $7.1 million in effective cap space; the rework could have unlocked up to $19.2 million if Burrow’s entire base salary were converted in the following season.

General Manager Duke Tobin hinted in April that the organization would consider shifting Burrow’s contract to accommodate future roster moves. He said the team “got the opportunity to add the right people and the right players,” and that challenges are acceptable if they build a championship‑contending squad for the 2026 campaign and to win together.

Burrow’s second full season carries weight after a turf‑toe injury sidelined him in 2023, limiting his play to 12 games. Cincinnati aims for a playoff berth for the first time since 2022, and the cap relief could enable signings that shore up depth behind a veteran quarterback still recovering from injury for the team success.
