Barry Wilburn, the Washington Commanders defensive back who led the NFL with nine interceptions in 1987, has died at age 62. The Commanders announced his passing Sunday, with Action News 5 in Memphis reporting he died in a house fire early Friday.

Drafted by Washington in 1985 after playing college football at Mississippi, Wilburn formed a formidable defensive backfield alongside Hall of Famer Darrell Green. His nine interceptions that season represented nearly half his career total of 20 regular-season picks.

Wilburn's crowning achievement came in Super Bowl XXII, where Washington routed the Denver Broncos 42-10. The cornerback intercepted two passes in that game, contributing to the franchise's second Super Bowl victory. After five seasons with Washington, he played for the Cleveland Browns in 1992 and spent a couple of seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wilburn's death marks the passing of a player who excelled during one of Washington's most successful eras, leaving behind memories of his ball-hawking skills that helped define the team's defensive identity in the 1980s.

Quick Fact: Wilburn recorded nine of his 20 career interceptions in the 1987 season.
