Veteran coach Paul Westhead, 87, received the National Basketball Coaches Association’s Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday in San Antonio. The honor will be presented during Game 2 of the NBA Finals, cementing his place among the sport’s most honored figures. The ceremony, held amid the Finals’ electric atmosphere, featured remarks from former players and coaches.

Westhead guided the 1980 Los Angeles Lakers to an NBA title and the 2007 Phoenix Mercury to a WNBA championship. His 1989‑90 Loyola Marymount squad, starring Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble, posted a 122‑point average that still tops Division I history. Across six NBA seasons and stints at La Salle, George Mason and Oregon, his run‑and‑gun offense redefined scoring.

The NBCA highlighted Westhead’s “integrity, competitive excellence and tireless promotion of NBA basketball,” traits shared by recent winners Don Nelson, Rudy Tomjanovich and Rick Adelman. Recognizing a legendary coach whose influence stretches from high school courts in Philadelphia to a Japanese pro team, the award underscores a rare blend of innovation and longevity in basketball coaching.
