Sarr's Foot Surgery Delays Wizards' Rebuild Push

Washington Wizards center Alex Sarr has undergone surgery to repair a fractured right foot and is expected to be healthy for the start of the season, the team said Monday. The injury occurred during a contact play in an offseason workout late last week. He was drafted second overall in the 2024 draft.

Sarr, 21, averaged 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks last season when healthy, but played only 48 games due to injuries. Washington has lost 64 or more games each of the past three seasons and is aiming for a playoff push with Sarr as a key piece of its rebuild.

After trading for Trae Young and Anthony Davis last season, Washington hopes Young's playmaking and Davis' presence will help Sarr flourish in his third year. The franchise also eyed a No. 1 pick this month, adding depth to its young core that includes Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson, Bub Carrington and Will Riley.

Sarr's foot surgery sets a clear recovery timeline, with the Wizards targeting his return for the season opener. If he stays healthy, his per‑game averages could lift Washington's interior defense and rebounding, potentially turning the franchise into a competitive force in the Eastern Conference against a playoff‑contending squad in their division.
