Hawks Decline Kuminga's Option, Forward Hits Free Agency

The Atlanta Hawks will not pick up Jonathan Kuminga's $24.3 million team option for next season, clearing the 23-year-old forward to become a free agent. Kuminga appeared in 16 games after February's trade from Golden State, averaging 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in 22.1 minutes per contest. His performance showed flashes of potential but lacked consistency throughout the regular season.

The move concludes a tumultuous period that began with contract disputes between Kuminga and the Warriors, where he spent four seasons as the seventh overall pick in 2021. Atlanta acquired him alongside Buddy Hield in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis, hoping to unlock his athletic upside. Kuminga exploded for 27 points in his Hawks debut against Washington but managed just two 20-point games afterward while primarily coming off the bench.

Playoff action revealed both his ceiling and limitations. Kuminga scored 19 and 21 points in Atlanta's two victories over New York, helping build a 2-1 series advantage. However, he contributed only 34 points total across the final three losses as the Hawks fell in six games. Over his five-year career, he's averaged 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds.

This decision leaves Kuminga searching for a new home after failing to secure a consistent role in Atlanta's rotation. The Hawks save significant cap space while acknowledging his talent hasn't translated to reliable production.
