Athletics infielder Zack Gelof left Tuesday night's 3-1 loss to the Giants in the second inning after Matt Chapman stepped on his right hand during a tag play at second base. The gruesome injury, described as a laceration and contusion, forced Gelof to exit immediately with blood visible from spike punctures.

Chapman was attempting to turn an RBI single into a double when the throw from left fielder Tyler Soderstrom arrived ahead of him. As Gelof took the one-hop throw on his knees, he appeared to slip while reaching for the tag. Chapman's foot landed heel-first on Gelof's hand, causing the injury that ended what had been a remarkable run at the plate.

Gelof's 24-game hitting streak matched the longest in MLB over the past two seasons and ranked sixth in Athletics franchise history. During this stretch, he hit .351 with five homers and 12 RBIs, serving as Oakland's most productive hitter in June. The 26-year-old was batting .282 overall with 11 homers and 29 RBIs before exiting.

This setback interrupts a promising resurgence for Gelof, who struggled through injuries in 2024 after an impressive 2023 rookie campaign. His loss leaves a significant gap in Oakland's lineup during a critical stretch of the season.
