Gelof Injury Cuts A's Lineup

During the third inning of a scoreless contest, Athletics outfielder Zack Gelof collided with the left‑field fence while attempting a sliding catch after a deep fly from Jack Perkins. Gelof’s right knee struck the fence, prompting him to grab his leg in pain and exit the field. Manager Mark Kotsay and head athletic trainer Jeff Collins rushed to assess him. The outfielder limped back briefly before being replaced by Colby Thomas.

Detroit Tigers completed a 4-1 win, sweeping the series. Gelof’s only at‑bat in the second ended in a ground out. The Athletics had a scoreless first inning, but the Tigers’ offense took control.

Gelof finishes the season with a .273 average, 11 home runs and 29 RBI after a bounce‑back year that began at Triple‑A Las Vegas. His 24‑game hitting streak and 27‑game on‑base streak ended with the injury, and he had previously been activated from the injured list on July 4.

The injury removes a versatile player from the lineup, forcing the Athletics to rely on bench depth for the remainder of the month. The Tigers’ sweep tightens the division race, while the Athletics must shuffle rotations and defensive positions to compensate.
