Twins Release Hendriks After Spring Struggles

The Minnesota Twins have released right-hander Liam Hendriks from his minor league contract after he failed to earn a spot in the team's bullpen. The 37-year-old signed with Minnesota on Feb. 12 and posted a 3.86 ERA this spring training, allowing three runs over seven innings in seven appearances. Hendriks would have earned $2.25 million if promoted to the 40-man roster.

Hendriks carries an impressive resume with 116 saves across 14 seasons, including 114 from 2019-2022 with Oakland and Chicago. His 2021 season with the White Sox stands out as he set a personal best with 38 saves. However, the right-hander has faced significant health challenges since the 2022 season, including a Stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis.

The release follows a difficult stretch for Hendriks, who was limited to just five appearances in 2023 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Last season with Boston, he posted a 6.59 ERA in 14 games before his season ended due to right hip inflammation. The veteran reliever now faces an uncertain future after his latest setback with the Twins.
