Sonny Gray IL Stint Compounds Red Sox Early Struggles

Boston Red Sox placed veteran starter Sonny Gray on the 15-day injured list with a right hamstring strain Tuesday, one day after he exited his start against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park. Gray walked Gleyber Torres in the third inning before grabbing his right leg and bending down on the mound. Manager Alex Cora and a trainer came out before Gray walked off the field.

Gray, 36, is in his first season with Boston after being acquired in a trade from St. Louis last November. He's 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA across five starts this year, as the Red Sox have gotten off to a 9-13 start. "I felt just like a grab to my right hamstring, something I've felt before," Gray said Monday. "I threw a warmup pitch, same feeling, not a grab, more of like a tightness after that."

The Red Sox recalled left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego from Triple-A Worcester to fill Gray's roster spot, with the team opening a series against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. The 27-year-old Samaniego made his MLB debut on April 8 against Milwaukee, throwing 3 2/3 hitless, scoreless innings with four strikeouts over three appearances.
