Sonny Gray Exits Patriots' Day Game With Hamstring Tightness

Sonny Gray exited Monday's Patriots' Day game against the Detroit Tigers in the third inning due to right hamstring tightness. The Red Sox starter had just walked Gleyber Torres when he began stretching and bending his right leg on the mound. Pitching coach Andrew Bailey and catcher Carlos Narváez quickly visited the mound.

Manager Alex Cora and a trainer soon followed. After taking a few warmup throws and a brief conversation, Gray walked off the field without argument. The 36-year-old was replaced by left-hander Danny Coulombe. Prior to the injury, Gray owned a 2-1 record with a 4.43 ERA this season.

The veteran was acquired in a trade from St. Louis in November, bringing experience to Boston's rotation. His early departure leaves questions about the Red Sox starting rotation depth heading into the week.
