Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce will miss offseason workouts after undergoing ankle surgery. General manager Chris Ballard revealed Pierce played through nagging ankle pain throughout last season despite his production. Despite signing a four-year, $116 million contract extension last month, the decision was made to surgically correct the issue now to ensure full recovery before the season begins.

The timing of Pierce's surgery comes after he finished last season with impressive statistics, posting a league-high 21.3 yards per catch and career-high 1,003 receiving yards. Ballard emphasized that the Colts are counting heavily on Pierce this season, especially after trading veteran receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this offseason. Pierce had planned to push through the issue during the 2026 season.

Ballard estimated the recovery time will take approximately three months and expects no long-term implications. The Colts' absence also included quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. and cornerback Kenny Moore II, who have both requested trades. Ballard confirmed discussions have occurred regarding their attendance, with both sides appearing to be in agreement on the situation.
