Kansas City Royals closer Carlos Estevez has been placed on the injured list with a left foot contusion, the team announced Wednesday. Estevez, who led the majors with 42 saves last season, was hit by a line drive during Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves. The injury occurred in the ninth inning of a loss to the Braves.

Estevez, who experienced lower velocity during spring training, is eligible to return from the IL on April 14. The injury creates an immediate opportunity for Lucas Erceg to handle save situations while Estevez recovers. John Schreiber will also factor into high-leverage situations during the closer's absence.

In a corresponding move, the Royals called up reliever Steven Cruz from Triple-A Omaha. The timing is particularly challenging for Kansas City, as Estevez's absence comes at the start of the regular season when every game carries significant weight in the standings.
