Major League Baseball umpire Ron Kulpa has been diagnosed with a concussion and will miss at least a week of games after being struck in the mask by a foul ball during Saturday's Miami Marlins game against the New York Yankees. Kulpa left the game in the fourth inning after the incident, which occurred when Jakob Marsee fouled off a pitch from Paul Blackburn with two outs and a runner on base.

The 57-year-old veteran umpire was hit on the first pitch of the at-bat and briefly spoke with catcher Austin Wells before staying in the game. Marsee singled three pitches later, scoring Agustín Ramírez on a throwing error by Cody Bellinger. As the next batter stepped up, Kulpa stepped away, signaled to the Yankees dugout, and was examined by two athletic trainers before exiting under his own power.

Scott Barry replaced Kulpa behind the plate after an 11-minute delay, moving from first base. Kulpa, who made his MLB debut in 1998 and worked the World Series in 2011 and 2021, will undergo follow-up exams under MLB's concussion protocols. He was replaced on Sunday's crew by Derek Thomas.
