The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired outfielder Robert Hassell III from the Washington Nationals in exchange for cash or a player to be named later. The 24-year-old, once a top prospect, has struggled to establish himself in the major leagues.

This season, Hassell has posted a .215 batting average with two home runs and 21 RBIs in Triple-A Rochester. He made his MLB debut with the Nationals in the previous year, recording a .223 average with three homers and 18 RBIs over 70 games. Hassell was originally a first-round draft pick by the San Diego Padres in 2020.

He was recognized as a top-40 prospect by MLB Pipeline in both 2022 and 2023. Hassell was also a piece of the significant Juan Soto trade in 2022, moving from San Diego to Washington. While other players involved in that trade have found success, Hassell has yet to make a significant impact at the major league level.
