Ramirez faces 5‑week layoff after hand surgery

Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez underwent left‑hand surgery Tuesday to excise the hook of a broken hamate bone. The injury occurred in the fifth inning of Saturday’s 3‑1 win over Detroit, when Ramirez fouled out on a pop‑up to catcher Dillon Dingler. He will miss the series against the Yankees, a key divisional showdown. It marks only the second IL stint in his 14‑year career.

Ramirez, 33, has logged a franchise‑record 1,681 games and remains the only Cleveland player with at least 300 steals and 250 homers. He previously broke a hamate in his right hand in 2019, missing just a month. Doctors project a five to seven weeks recovery, a timeline that could sideline him through the mid‑season stretch for the club.

Cleveland also placed outfielder Angel Martinez on the 10‑day IL for a non‑displaced fracture in his left foot, another loss from Saturday’s game. To fill the roster, the club summoned prospect Petey Halpin from Triple‑A Columbus. Ramirez’s absence leaves a hole in the middle of a lineup that has powered the Guardians into a competitive AL Central race.
