Michael Conforto Signs Minor League Deal with Cubs

Free agent outfielder Michael Conforto has agreed to a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs, sources confirmed to ESPN. The 32-year-old hit just .199 for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season and will need to impress during spring training to secure a roster spot.

Conforto's best years came early with the New York Mets, where he posted an .864 OPS and 12.2 Baseball-Reference wins above replacement from 2017 to 2020. Since 2021, however, he hasn't hit higher than .239 or produced an OPS-plus above 100. The left-handed hitter has 47 home runs combined over the last three seasons with the Giants and Dodgers.

The Cubs have a crowded outfield of minor league invites that includes Dylan Carlson and Chas McCormick. With center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and right fielder/DH Seiya Suzuki leaving for the World Baseball Classic, there should be opportunities for non-roster invitees like Conforto, who brings 179 career home runs and a 115 OPS-plus to camp.
