Mets' Vientos out, Holmes progresses

The New York Mets will be without infielder/designated hitter Mark Vientos for six to eight weeks after he fractured his right hand. Vientos sustained the injury Thursday when he was hit by a pitch from Kansas City Royals pitcher Michael Wacha. He is batting .211 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs this season. Manager Andy Green indicated Eric Wagaman will likely see increased playing time at first base.

In a positive development for the Mets, pitcher Clay Holmes threw 40 pitches during a live batting practice session Friday. Holmes has been sidelined since May 15 with a broken right leg. He was the Mets' most effective starter prior to his injury, posting a 4-4 record with a 2.39 ERA in nine starts. It is currently too early to determine when Holmes might begin a rehab assignment.

Vientos' absence impacts a Mets lineup that has struggled recently. His slump had already relegated him to platooning against left-handed pitchers. Holmes' potential return offers a boost to a rotation that has been inconsistent. As the Mets sit in last place, Holmes, with a player option for 2027, could become a trade commodity before the Aug. 3 deadline.
