Mets Roster Shuffled After Tauchmen Knee Injury

New York Mets outfielder Mike Tauchman suffered a meniscus tear in his left knee during Saturday's game, requiring surgery that will sideline him for the start of the season. The injury upends the club's plans just days before their opener against Pittsburgh on Thursday. Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed the diagnosis, noting Tauchman had been projected to make the roster after signing a minor league deal last month.

Tauchman's absence likely secures a spot for outfield prospect Carson Benge as the primary right fielder. The Mets now face a roster decision: carry a fifth outfielder or add another infielder. Internal candidates include left-handed-hitting outfielder Jared Young and switch-hitting infielder Vidal Bruján, who would provide a backup shortstop option. Bichette would serve as Lindor's backup if Bruján doesn't make the cut.

Meanwhile, Craig Kimbrel, the nine-time All-Star reliever, will not make the team after the Mets informed him of their decision. Kimbrel, who signed a minor league deal in January, is "leaning" toward remaining with the organization rather than joining another team. The right-hander posted a 2.45 ERA with 16 strikeouts and six walks in 14 appearances for Atlanta and Houston last season.
