Mark Vientos Injured, Mets Lose Third Baseman

New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos will be placed on the injured list after fracturing his right hand Thursday. Vientos sustained the injury in the second inning of the Mets' 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals when he was hit by a 92 mph fastball from Royals pitcher Michael Wacha.

Interim manager Andy Green confirmed the IL placement but stated Vientos is still undergoing evaluation to determine if surgery is required. Vientos, batting .211 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs this season, has seen his playing time reduced recently due to offensive struggles and the emergence of other players. This marks Vientos' third career IL stint.

Brett Baty replaced Vientos at third base, with rookie A.J. Ewing shifting to second base for his first career appearance at the position. Tyrone Taylor entered the game later and hit a game-tying homer in the fifth inning, contributing to the Mets' five-run rally. The loss of Vientos further complicates lineup decisions for the Mets as they navigate the season.
