Mariners' Julio Rodriguez exits game after helmet hit by throw

Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez left Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Angels after taking a throw to the back of his helmet. Rodriguez was advancing on a ground ball in the first inning when Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel's throw struck him as he slid into second base.

Despite the impact, Rodriguez initially stayed in the game. Manager Dan Wilson and a trainer evaluated him before he played half an inning in the field. However, the team removed him in the third inning, replacing him with Victor Robles. Robles later exited after being hit by a pitch, leading to Weston Wilson taking over in center field.

Rodriguez, a three-time All-Star, has been remarkably durable this season. He appeared in 87 of Seattle's 88 games and played a career-high 160 games in 2025. His potential absence would represent a significant blow to the Mariners' playoff hopes given his offensive contributions and defensive range in center field.

The injury occurred during a critical double-play attempt that could have changed the game's momentum. Seattle's ability to maintain their outfield defense while Rodriguez recovers will be essential for their postseason push.
