Don Mattingly coaches All-Star Game vs. former team

Don Mattingly will coach under Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts at the All-Star Game in Philadelphia, a situation he admits feels "weird." After leaving his bench coach position with the Toronto Blue Jays following the World Series loss to the Dodgers, Mattingly initially thought he was finished with baseball. However, he is now the interim manager for the Philadelphia Phillies and has guided them to contention in the NL East.

Mattingly's decision to continue in baseball was influenced by his son, who urged him not to stop. He joined the Phillies organization at the suggestion of another son, Preston, who is the general manager. This move reunited him with his family, a key reason he cited for leaving Toronto after reaching his first World Series.

Since taking over as interim manager in late April, Mattingly has led the Phillies to a 45-24 record, positioning them just two games behind Atlanta. The team boasts several All-Stars, including Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and NL starting pitcher Cristopher Sanchez. Mattingly, who has 23 straight seasons as a manager or coach, previously managed the Dodgers and Miami Marlins and played 14 seasons for the Yankees, earning 1985 AL MVP honors. He expressed gratitude for his extensive career, regardless of a World Series ring.
