Diaz elbow surgery sidelines Dodgers closer

Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz will undergo surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, a source confirmed to ESPN. The 32-year-old reliever has been placed on the 15-day injured list after allowing three runs without recording an out in Sunday's loss. Diaz has struggled this season with a 10.50 ERA despite recording four saves.

The Dodgers signed Diaz to a three-year, $69 million contract after he opted out of his deal with the New York Mets. The seven-year Mets veteran accumulated 144 saves before joining Los Angeles. His absence creates a significant hole in the Dodgers' bullpen as they pursue another championship.

Los Angeles recalled left-hander Jake Eder from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace Diaz on the roster. The 27-year-old went 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in 18⅓ innings for the Angels last season after being designated for assignment by Washington. Diaz's injury raises questions about the Dodgers' late-inning stability.
