The Oakland Athletics have announced the return of Bob Melvin as a special assistant in baseball operations. The 64-year-old former manager, who led the A's to three AL West titles from 2011 to 2021, will advise the front office in his new role.

Melvin's managerial career includes six playoff appearances with Oakland and a 853-764 record. He was named American League Manager of the Year twice with the A's in 2012 and 2018. His overall managerial record of 1,678-1,588 ranks 20th in MLB history, with his 2007 National League Manager of the Year award coming during his time with the Diamondbacks.

After leaving Oakland following the 2021 season for San Diego, Melvin also managed the Giants before being fired after last season's 81-81 record. The former catcher played 692 games across 10 seasons with seven different teams, including 265 games with his hometown Giants from 1986-88. His return to the A's organization marks a full-circle moment for the veteran manager who remains one of baseball's most respected figures.
