Major League Baseball reported the percentage of Black players on Opening Day rosters increased for the second straight year, reaching 6.8% after climbing from 6.2% in 2025 and 6.0% in 2024. This marks the first time the demographic has risen consecutively in at least two decades, with a 0.6% jump representing the largest single-season increase since 2017-2018.

The current 6.8% figure stands in stark contrast to the 18% recorded when tracking began in 1991. Among this year's 64 Black players, 20 developed through MLB programs like the Youth Academy, Breakthrough Series and Hank Aaron Invitational, showing the league's efforts to increase diversity are beginning to yield tangible results.

Black players averaged 27.8 years old, younger than the league's overall average of 29.25. The group includes 22 players under 26 and eight over 32, with Milwaukee outfielder Blake Perkins representing the pipeline as he joined the Brewers on March 26 after being assigned from the minors.
