All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams is transitioning to second base for the Washington Nationals, according to manager Blake Butera. The move, described as "multiday than multiweek," will see Abrams swap positions with second baseman Nasim Nunez.

"Just thought this was the best thing for our team going forward," Butera said. "We think with those two up the middle and Nasim playing more shortstop gives us the best chance."

Abrams, who has played exclusively shortstop during his five seasons with the Nationals, is having a career year offensively with 28 homers, a major league-best 91 RBIs, a .284 average and an .898 OPS. However, he leads the majors with 19 errors and has a .958 fielding percentage, both career-worst numbers.

"The competitor in me wants to say I can do this at shortstop but also understand we have to do what's best for the team," Abrams said. Nunez leads the majors in range factor at second base with a .965 fielding percentage and nine errors.

The Nationals have also invested in shortstop prospects Seaver King and Eli Willits, the latter being Washington's No. 1 prospect per MLB.com after being selected first overall in 2025.
