The Houston Astros have optioned right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows to Triple-A Sugar Land following a difficult outing against the Washington Nationals. Burrows surrendered a career-high 10 runs, including two home runs, in a 12-11 loss on Tuesday. This performance contributes to his 4-9 record and a 5.99 ERA for the season, placing him among the league leaders in losses and home runs allowed.

Manager Joe Espada expressed a need for Burrows to adjust his approach to hitters to generate more swings and misses and avoid solid contact. Burrows, acquired from Pittsburgh in December, has pitched a team-high 94 2/3 innings this year. His recent pitching history includes a brief stint in the bullpen last month and mixed results upon returning to the starting rotation.

The Astros have not yet finalized their starting rotation plans for the upcoming series against Texas. With an off day on Thursday, they may not fill Burrows' spot until after the All-Star break. The team recalled right-hander Alimber Santa from Sugar Land to occupy Burrows' roster spot. Santa has a 0.71 ERA in eight games with the Astros and was part of a combined no-hitter in his major league debut.
