Astros lose Loperfido, add Shewmake in minor trade

The Houston Astros placed outfielder Joey Loperfido on the 10‑day injured list Sunday after a right quad strain suffered in Friday’s 9‑4 loss to St. Louis. Loperfido entered the season batting .259 with six RBIs in 20 games. The club also recalled right‑hander Jayden Murray from Triple‑A Sugar Land. Murray posted a 3.20 ERA in 12 Triple‑A outings.

The move comes as the club seeks to stabilize a lineup that has struggled offensively since early April. Loperfido’s absence removes a left‑handed bat that provided depth in the outfield, while Murray offers a fresh arm for a bullpen plagued by inconsistency. Meanwhile, the Astros struck a minor trade with the Yankees, sending prospect Wilmy Sanchez to New York for infielder Braden Shewmake.

Shewmake, who spent the season’s opening weeks with the Yankees’ Triple‑A squad in Scranton/Wilkes‑Barre, brings a versatile middle‑infielder option for Houston’s struggling infield. His left‑side bat also offers a modest pop option. The addition arrives as the Astros sit near the AL West’s middle of the pack, needing both defensive reliability and bench depth to stay competitive in the final stretch of the season.
