WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike stated that the union and the WNBA are actively working to rebuild trust following productive discussions about addressing player harassment. The WNBPA executive and DEI committees met with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert for 90 minutes to discuss racist, hateful, and abusive messages directed at players, as well as officiating.

Ogwumike emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relationships and trust, especially during challenging times. She expressed optimism following the meeting, noting Engelbert's receptiveness to player feedback. This follows a recent contentious labor negotiation that concluded with a significant collective bargaining agreement.

Despite progress, players continue to face escalating harassment, including racial slurs and death threats. Ogwumike highlighted the need for proactive measures, quoting WNBPA executive director Terri Jackson, who urged the league to stay ahead of its growth. The league's "No Space For Hate" initiative, set to launch before the 2025 season, aims to combat hate and promote respect. Ogwumike believes accountability is key to ensuring players feel safer, and the union is committed to working with league leadership.
