WNBA Offseason Chaos: Expansion Draft, Free Agency, and CBA Changes

The WNBA enters a compressed 46-day offseason after finalizing a new collective bargaining agreement that will dramatically reshape women's basketball. With training camps opening April 19 and the season starting May 8, teams face unprecedented pressure to complete expansion drafts, free agency, and the college draft in just two weeks.

Under the new CBA, the salary cap jumps to $7 million (up from $1.5 million) while the supermax reaches $1.4 million, creating what executives call a historic free agency period. More than 100 players become free agents, including former MVPs A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart, with negotiations beginning April 9 and signings allowed April 12.

The expansion draft on April 6 will see Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire each select 12 players from unprotected rosters, with teams allowed to protect five players each. The compressed timeline has some executives predicting less movement and more short-term deals, though others expect significant roster turnover given the massive salary increases. The Dallas Wings hold the No. 1 pick in the April 13 draft, which now features 45 total selections as the league grows to 15 teams.
