The WNBA has set a May 8 start date for its 30th season, pending a new collective bargaining agreement with the players' union. The league unveiled a 44-game schedule for the 2026 season, which will include a 17-day break for the FIBA World Cup in September. Teams will play from May through September, with playoffs beginning on September 27.

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert framed the schedule release as a celebration of the league's history, momentum, and expansion into Toronto and Portland. By publishing the schedule now, teams can begin selling tickets, booking travel, and securing arena dates. The plan also includes the Commissioner's Cup in June and the All-Star Game in Chicago on July 25.

However, the entire timeline hinges on the league and union reaching a new CBA, which has been under a moratorium since early January. Without an agreement, free agency and the expansion draft for the new teams remain on hold. The two sides are currently in a 'status quo' period negotiating in good faith, with the old CBA still in effect.
