President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on American freestyle skier Hunter Hess, calling him 'a real Loser' after Hess expressed mixed feelings about representing the U.S. during the Trump administration's immigration policies. The controversy erupted when reporters asked U.S. athletes at a Milan Cortina Games news conference how they felt representing their country amid heightened immigration enforcement actions.

Hess responded that while he doesn't agree with the current situation, he's competing on behalf of everyone who helped him reach the Olympics. 'Just because I'm wearing the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that's going on in the U.S.,' he stated. Trump's criticism came through his Truth Social account, suggesting Hess shouldn't have tried out for the team if he felt that way.

The backlash extended beyond the president. YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, who has 4.4 million X followers, told Hess to 'go live somewhere else' if he doesn't want to represent the country. Paul was later photographed sitting beside Vice President JD Vance at a U.S. women's hockey game in Milan. Other conservative figures including former NFL quarterback Brett Favre and actor Rob Schneider joined the criticism on social media.

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee acknowledged receiving an increasing number of abusive and harmful messages directed at athletes, stating they were working to remove content and report credible threats to law enforcement. The committee emphasized its commitment to athlete well-being and safety both on and off the field of play. Several demonstrations have broken out in Milan against the local deployment of ICE agents, even after clarification that they are from an investigations unit separate from the enforcement unit conducting the immigration crackdown in the U.S.
