Rahm Slams DP World Tour's 6-Event Rule as 'Extortion'

Jon Rahm has accused the DP World Tour of attempting to 'extort' golfers by mandating six events per season, refusing to sign an agreement that would force him to play two tournaments chosen by the tour. Speaking ahead of the LIV Golf tournament in Hong Kong, the two-time major champion said he'd only commit to four events but the tour hasn't agreed to this compromise.

The dispute intensified when the DP World Tour granted conditional releases to eight players, including Tyrrell Hatton and Adrian Meronk, to compete in LIV Golf events this season. These players reportedly agreed to pay outstanding fines of up to $3 million, participate in more tournaments than required, and withdraw pending appeals. Rahm noted he was previously a dual member of both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour without needing releases for PGA events.

Rahm's stance could jeopardize his participation in the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland, as his appeal against past sanctions remains unresolved. The Spanish star emphasized he's willing to fulfill commitments but refuses to be dictated to about tournament participation. His comments highlight the ongoing tension between traditional tours and the upstart LIV Golf League, with player autonomy at the center of the conflict.
