A Czechoslovakian wolfdog named Nazghul became an unexpected star at the Milan Cortina Olympics, running onto the women's cross-country team sprint course during qualifying heats. The dog, owned by a local resident, escaped during a walk and joined athletes as they crossed the finish line, much to spectators' delight.

While venue officials initially suspected a violation of the strict no-pets policy, it was revealed that Nazghul had simply followed his owner to the venue. Greek skier Konstantina Charalampidou noted the dog was chasing the finish-line camera and appeared friendly, though Croatian skier Tena Hadzic admitted she was initially concerned about a possible attack.

The incident caused no disruption to the competition, with athletes continuing their runs as the wolfdog wandered through the finish area. The owner explained that Nazghul is typically "stubborn, but very sweet" and had been unusually emotional that morning, seemingly wanting to follow his family to the venue. The Olympic Games continue with multiple events scheduled through the closing ceremony.
