Koepka Confirms U.S. Open Participation Despite Hand Injury Concerns

Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka will compete in this week's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills after withdrawing from last week's RBC Canadian Open. The 36-year-old experienced weakness and numbness in his left hand's pinky and ring fingers, making it difficult to grip his clubs properly. Koepka underwent neck scans in Canada and New York, which showed no issues with his previously herniated C5 and C6 vertebrae.

Doctors believe the hand problem stems from either an ulnar nerve flareup or thoracic outlet syndrome, a condition involving nerve compression in the neck and upper chest area. Koepka captured his second U.S. Open title the last time the tournament visited Shinnecock Hills in 2018, posting a final-round 68 to win by one stroke over Tommy Fleetwood.

Since returning to the PGA Tour from LIV Golf in January, Koepka has recorded six top-25 finishes in 12 starts. He plans to practice at Shinnecock Hills on Tuesday, pending how his hand responds. When asked about the possibility of withdrawing, Koepka simply replied, 'I'm gonna go this week.'

His presence adds significant star power to the U.S. Open field as he seeks his third championship. Koepka's recent form and past success at this venue make him a legitimate contender despite the injury uncertainty.
