Kansas Coaching Future Uncertain After Tournament Exit

Kansas coach Bill Self remains uncertain about his coaching future after a heartbreaking 67-65 buzzer-beater loss to St. John's in the NCAA tournament. The 63-year-old Hall of Fame coach stated his decision won't be based on performance but rather his health, though he emphasized feeling "as good as I've felt in a long time."

Self has undergone multiple heart procedures in recent years, including a catheterization in 2023 and stent insertions in 2024. Despite these health challenges, he has compiled an impressive 634-167 record at Kansas since 2003, winning two national championships. The Jayhawks now have failed to advance past the second round for four straight years, adding pressure to the program.

Self downplayed suggestions that Kansas needs to change its identity, instead focusing on recruiting improvements. "I actually believe that we need to do a really good job evaluating and recruiting," he said. The coach plans to discuss his future with family before making any decisions about whether to continue leading the program.
