Judge to Rule on Texas Tech QB Sorsby's Eligibility After Gambling Scandal

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby faces an uncertain college future as Judge Ken Curry prepares to decide his eligibility following a two-hour court hearing Monday. The NCAA ruled Sorsby permanently ineligible after discovering he placed thousands of bets on college and professional sports, including wagers on his own Indiana football team while playing for the Hoosiers.

Sorsby acknowledged placing at least $90,000 in bets over four years across multiple sportsbooks, with more than 9,000 total wagers including parlays. He bet on Indiana football games in 2022-23 and continued gambling after transferring from Cincinnati. NCAA rules mandate permanent eligibility loss for athletes wagering on their own teams. His attorneys argue the gambling stems from mental health issues and seek a temporary injunction to allow him to play in 2026.

Sorsby completed a 35-day rehab program for gambling and anxiety disorders after leaving Texas Tech in April. The Red Raiders, who deemed him ineligible April 27, now appeal for a two-game suspension instead. Texas Tech maintains Sorsby never bet on Cincinnati football during his two seasons as starter, and didn't compromise game integrity.

The judge's ruling, expected soon, will determine whether Sorsby can join Texas Tech this season or enter the NFL supplemental draft by June 22. This marks the first case where a judge could override NCAA gambling penalties, potentially setting precedent for how mental health intersects with eligibility rules.
