Jim Boeheim Blames Syracuse Players for Autry's Firing

Jim Boeheim has defended former Syracuse coach Adrian Autry, arguing that Autry's dismissal was largely due to poor performance from the Orange's top players rather than coaching deficiencies. Syracuse fired Autry on Wednesday after a 15-17 season that marked the program's first consecutive losing seasons since 1968-69.

Boeheim, who coached Autry as a player and later promoted him to associate head coach, called Autry "a good coach" who was let down by his best players. Speaking on ACC Network and Cuse Sports Talk, Boeheim specifically criticized J.J. Starling and Donnie Freeman, Syracuse's two leading returning scorers, for having "horrible years" that cost the team wins. Starling's scoring dropped from 17.8 to 10.9 points per game, while Freeman saw declines in rebounding and shooting percentages despite slightly improved scoring.

Boeheim also pointed to Syracuse's NIL funding challenges, noting the program spends around $8 million annually compared to $10-20 million at other basketball programs. He compared Syracuse's situation to Boston College and Georgia Tech, two other ACC schools that recently fired coaches. The longtime Syracuse coach emphasized that when a team's top players underperform, wins become nearly impossible regardless of coaching.
