71-year-old Tom Izzo emphatically dismissed retirement questions following Michigan State's 67-63 Sweet 16 loss to UConn. "Why? What the hell am I going to do?" he questioned rhetorically. The veteran Spartans coach, who has guided the program to 8 Final Fours and a national title in 2000, showed no signs of slowing down despite his age.

Izzo's Spartans showed resilience in the 2026 tournament, overcoming a 25-6 first-half deficit to take the lead before falling. "The minute I don't feel good, the minute I don't feel like I'm giving my AD or president or school every ounce of energy I have every day, you don't have to worry about it," he declared, emphasizing his commitment to the program.

Despite not reaching the Final Four since 2019—his longest drought—Izzo remains optimistic. "Tomorrow I'm going to the portal," he said, noting his approach differs from others. "I'm going right to my frickin' locker room, and I'm going to talk to each and every player." He expects to return seven to eight players to complement what he called a strong freshman class.
