Longtime Spartans coach Tom Izzo slammed the leadership upheaval at Michigan State on Monday, calling the recent exits of president Kevin Guskiewicz and athletic director J Batt “disgusting” and “ridiculous.” Izzo, who has guided the basketball program since 1995 and captured the 2000 national title, demanded that the 600,000‑strong alumni base intervene before the turmoil further destabilizes the university.

Guskiewicz left for Clemson after only two years, citing an “unsustainable situation” created by board disputes over initiatives such as Spartan Ventures, the revenue‑generating arm Batt launched. Trustees recently tightened a code of ethics, censuring two members who opposed the revision. Batt departed two weeks later for Kentucky, leaving the athletic department without a permanent leader as a search begins.

Izzo urged Spartan Nation to rally, warning that continued infighting could erode the program’s recruiting edge and donor support. Former AD Mark Hollis, now PGA tournament director, signaled interest in returning to the helm. With Guskiewicz remaining until an interim president is named, the university faces immediate pressure to stabilize its governance.

The board’s recent ethics vote and the censure of trustees Rema Vassar and Mike Balow underscore internal fractures that could affect future funding for projects like Spartan Ventures, keeping alumni watchful. Stakeholders fear that donor fatigue may rise if governance issues persist, potentially jeopardizing scholarships and facility upgrades.
