Iowa CC Baseball Player Killed in Bus Crash

Carter Johnson, a 19-year-old freshman outfielder for Iowa Lakes Community College, was identified as the victim in a tragic bus crash that killed one and injured 32 others. The accident occurred Wednesday morning when the team's bus overturned in a ditch on Iowa Highway 4 near Twin Lakes, about 110 miles northwest of Des Moines.

Johnson, who had appeared in one game this season after playing high school baseball at Rapid City Stevens in South Dakota, was pronounced dead at the scene. Iowa State Patrol Lt. Aaron Schmidt reported that teammates performing CPR on Johnson when emergency responders arrived. Three others were airlifted to trauma hospitals in Des Moines, while others were transported to four area hospitals. No updates on their conditions were provided Thursday.

Athletic director Troy Larson described Johnson as "a great teammate, a friend and a valued member of our athletic community" during a Thursday news conference. The Lakers, who held a 1-3 record, had their scheduled four-game series against North Arkansas College canceled following the tragedy.
