Auriemma Warns Title IX Is 'Out the Window' in College Sports

UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma delivered a stark assessment of Title IX's current state in college athletics, declaring the landmark legislation is "pretty much out the window" as revenue sharing reshapes the college sports landscape. Speaking in Fort Worth ahead of the Sweet 16, Auriemma expressed skepticism that schools would maintain equitable funding for women's sports when faced with the new $20.5 million revenue sharing payouts per school.

Auriemma, entering his 41st season with the Huskies and four wins from his 13th national title, suggested that Title IX protections are eroding at the highest levels of college athletics. "It appears to me that at the big conferences level, I think Title IX legislation is probably over," he said, questioning whether athletic departments would continue to allocate equal resources to women's basketball when football and men's basketball dominate revenue generation.

The erosion of Title IX protections accelerated after the Trump administration rescinded Biden-era guidance requiring equitable distribution of direct athlete payments. With schools now able to directly compensate athletes, Auriemma believes the future of women's sports funding will depend entirely on decisions made by conference commissioners and athletic directors rather than federal protections.
