Norway has become the first major country to propose a temporary ban on AI glasses in selected public places such as parks, beaches, schools, and kindergartens, citing privacy concerns. The centre‑left government will soon introduce a draft law and set up an expert group to develop permanent national rules. Digitalisation Minister Torgeir Micaelsen warned that the technology could photograph, film, or record people without consent, creating a society where individuals feel unsafe.

The proposal follows existing bans by Oslo schools and oil giant Equinor, and mirrors moves in Australia and courtrooms worldwide. While not seeking a total prohibition, the government emphasizes appropriate use where filming consent is not an issue. The debate intensifies as US tech firms like Meta, Google, and OpenAI see smart glasses as the next AI gateway, with Counterpoint Research forecasting over $1 trillion in consumer spending on wearables from 2026 to 2032, raising concerns about surveillance and “pervert technology.”.
