Norway Bans Generative AI in Elementary Schools Amid Education Concerns

Norway will prohibit elementary school students from using generative AI tools when classes resume in late August, extending restrictions already in place for smartphones and tablets. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere argued the technology lets children skip essential learning steps, insisting schools prioritize fundamental skills like reading, writing, and mathematics.

The ban covers students ages six to 13 in grades one through seven, while teenagers aged 14 to 16 may use AI only under teacher supervision. Students 17 and older are encouraged to use AI responsibly on their own. This follows Norway's 2024 smartphone prohibition, which reportedly reduced bullying and improved academic performance, particularly among girls.

The Nordic nation plans a broader social media ban for children under 16, mirroring Australia's approach. A parliamentary bill will emerge by year-end. Meanwhile, US lawmakers are considering the GUARD Act, which would require age verification for AI chatbots and potentially restrict access for minors.

These policy moves reflect growing global concern about children's exposure to AI technologies. While proponents cite educational benefits and mental health improvements, critics worry that defining "AI companions" versus general chatbots creates regulatory loopholes that tech companies could exploit.
