Ambienta has acquired four Nordic aquaculture technology companies—Norway's Bio Marine, FLS and Smir, and the Faroese business Gro Aqua—through its Ambienta IV fund. The acquisitions form a new platform aimed at scaling technologies in fish health, feed optimization, equipment, farming systems and waste treatment.
Sverre Taknes will lead the new platform as CEO. The combined businesses cover fish health, feeding, oxygen management, sea-lice control and sludge treatment. Ambienta expects the platform to create cross-selling opportunities across the group and speed up product development.
According to Ambienta, aquaculture is a €20 billion market that will double over the next decade. Bio Marine was founded in 2000 and is based in Surnadal, Norway. FLS, founded in 1913, is based in Kristiansund, Norway. Smir was founded in 2015 and is based in Langevåg, Norway. Gro Aqua, established in 1972, supplies integrated feeding systems, sludge treatment and turnkey feed barges across the Faroe Islands, the UK and Norway.
"Bio Marine, FLS, Smir, and Gro Aqua represent exactly the kind of technology-driven businesses we look for," said Milena Torciano, partner at Ambienta. Tjaldur, an existing industrial shareholder in Gro Aqua, is reinvesting alongside Ambienta. The Gro Aqua deal is subject to customary regulatory approvals.
