Federal prosecutors have identified 18 pitches, including one from a 2024 playoff game, that will be the focus of their gambling case against Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, set for trial in November. The pitches span 17 games from May 19, 2023, to May 28, 2025. Clase is accused of sharing advance pitch information with bettors who wagered on results and velocity.

His first pitch to Matt Vierling of the Detroit Tigers in the ninth inning of the Oct. 5, 2024, ALDS game—a 93 mph slider out of the strike zone—is on the list. The Guardians won that game 7-0. Prosecutors allege Guardians starter Luis Ortiz also participated by providing advance information on two pitches, though they were not named in filings.

Clase, Ortiz, and two other defendants face wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy charges and have pleaded not guilty. Jury selection begins in November. In February, prosecutors provided a preliminary list of pitches under investigation; Ortiz’s attorney noted Clase was accused of suspect pitches in at least 48 games.

Now, the government will seek to prove advance information was shared on approximately 18 of Clase’s pitches and two of Ortiz’s pitches. Clase and Ortiz have been on leave since summer 2025. Sportsbooks flagged unusual betting interest on Ortiz’s pitches in two June 2025 games.
