2026-27 Season Preview

The NBA is back, and ESPN's experts are already weighing in on the big questions, from whether the Spurs or Thunder will emerge from the West to whether the Knicks can reach the Finals. For a full team-by-team breakdown, all 30 franchises have been ranked with predictions for the season ahead.

Injury Concerns

Kings guard Ben Simmons suffered a torn Achilles tendon and will undergo surgery, ending his season before it begins. The Wizards also face uncertainty, as No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa left the preseason finale with an ankle injury and will be evaluated. In Golden State, Stephen Curry tweaked his right ankle in practice, but Steve Kerr said the superstar is "fine."

Roster Moves and Contracts

The Knicks waived Bruce Brown while keeping James Wiseman on the roster ahead of the season opener. The Thunder locked up guard Cason Wallace with a five-year, $139M extension, while the Suns signed center Oso Ighodaro to a three-year, $29M extension. The 76ers, short on frontcourt help, converted 7-foot-6 center Tacko Fall to a two-way contract.

Off the Court

Kevin Durant fired back at Suns owner Mat Ishbia on social media after Ishbia framed Phoenix's tenure in a way Durant disputed, making the feud a public one as the season approaches.

Coming Up

The season opener is imminent, with the Knicks set to open with Wiseman on the roster. Dybantsa's ankle will be checked before he is cleared for action.
