TrinamiX, a subsidiary of BASF, has filed a patent lawsuit against Apple in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. The company accuses Apple of infringing seven patents related to face authentication technology used in Face ID. TrinamiX alleges that while the original Face ID launched with the iPhone X in 2017 did not use its technology, newer iPhone and iPad models do. The complaint claims Apple knew or should have known that updating its devices to incorporate face authentication using material and skin detection infringed on its intellectual property. TrinamiX's technology is designed to distinguish real skin from photos, masks, or silicone copies, a feature it says conventional optical face scanning methods miss. The lawsuit names a broad range of Apple devices, including the iPhone 15 series, iPhone 16 lineup, and various iPad Pro models equipped with M4 and M5 chips. TrinamiX is seeking to block Apple from selling the accused products and is requesting a jury trial to determine damages and attorneys' fees.
