Apple announced Monday that Tim Cook will step down as CEO, marking the end of a 14-year tenure at the helm of the tech giant. Effective September 1, hardware engineering chief John Ternus will become the next CEO while Cook transitions to executive chairman of Apple's board. In his new role, Cook will assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world.

Leaders across politics and business have publicly weighed in on the transition. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called Cook "a legend" and expressed gratitude for everything he has done. President Trump praised Cook's performance, claiming he was "very impressed" to have the Apple CEO call to "kiss my ass." Alabama Governor Kay Ivey celebrated Cook's Alabama roots, noting the Mobile native and Auburn University graduate has made the state proud.

Berkshire Hathaway chairman Warren Buffett offered perhaps the most pointed industry assessment: "Apple would not be the Apple of today without Tim Cook." Buffett praised Cook's ability to navigate international relations and treat customers, employees, and shareholders fairly, calling him "one of a kind." Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey marked the moment more playfully with "RIP Tim Apple" on social media.
